Tribute to Elizabeth Casely
Elizabeth Casely, renowned artist and former mayoress of Bathurst has died, weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. She was 77 years old.
Twice widowed, she recently married Graham Casely but continued to use the surnames of MacKenzie and Griffiths in her work.
Born in Alexandria and schooled at the Diocesan School for Girls, she studied art at Rhodes and the PE Technikon.
She lived in Bathurst for many years and was mayoress during her husband’s, AG Griffiths, tenure as mayor.
A talented and prolific artist Elizabeth was commissioned to paint the portrait of the late Goven Mbeki for Fort Hare University in 2001.
In a tribute, the Rev Robin Murray of the Anglican Church said “She touched everyone’s life. She only saw the good in people. She was a very special person to many. Elizabeth was a woman of great energy and happiness - she lived out the gospel.”

Mrs Nan Austin
It was with a profound sense of sadness that the DSG community bade farewell in its chapel to a much loved Old Girl, loyal ex-staff member and friend, Mrs Nan Austin. Of great tribute to her life and comfort to her family were the many people who attended the memorial service. I extend my condolences once again to the Austin family on behalf of us all.
